Houston humidity is hard on bathrooms. Outdoor humidity regularly sits well above 70%, and a shower adds even more moisture. A bathroom that looks great on day one can show soft walls, cracked grout or mold within a few years if it was not built for this climate. Here is what matters most when you remodel a bathroom in Houston.
1. Waterproofing behind the tile
Tile and grout are not waterproof — the protection comes from what is behind them. A shower tiled over regular drywall, or one that skipped its waterproofing membrane, will fail. Ask how your shower will be built:
- Cement board, foam board or another approved tile backer in wet areas — not regular drywall
- A continuous waterproofing membrane on the walls and shower floor, including niches and benches
- Proper slope to the drain so water never sits on the shower floor
Moisture-resistant “green board” is not a substitute for a real waterproofing system inside the shower.
2. Ventilation sized for the room
An exhaust fan that vents to the outside (not into the attic) is essential. Larger primary bathrooms need a fan sized for the room. Run it during every shower and for 15–20 minutes afterwards, and aim to keep indoor humidity between about 30% and 50%.
3. Materials that handle moisture
- Porcelain tile is dense and absorbs very little water — ideal for floors and shower walls.
- Quartz vanity tops are non-porous and do not need sealing.
- Mold-resistant drywall and paint for the rest of the room.
- Frameless glass leaves fewer corners and seals for water to collect.
4. Details that prevent mold
Most mold starts with small, slow leaks: a weeping valve, a failed caulk joint or a toilet seal. Quality installation of fixtures, sealing every penetration in the shower, and leaving no gaps around tubs and pans make the difference.
5. Habits that keep it looking new
- Squeegee glass and walls after showers
- Keep the fan running after bathing
- Fix drips and running toilets promptly
- Re-caulk around tubs and showers when it starts to crack
